GENESIS ENERGY IS A MAJOR SUPPLIER AND GENERATOR OF ENERGY IN NEW ZEALAND

We are very conscious of the environmental effects of burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas, and we know that we play a key role in helping New Zealand meet its climate change objectives.

Most of our carbon dioxide emissions come from Huntly Power Station, which is New Zealand's largest thermal (coal and gas burning) power station.

We also operate hydro stations at Tongariro and Lake Waikaremoana, the Hau Nui Wind Farm in the Wairarapa, and generating facilities at Te Awamutu and Kinleith.

Our biggest challenge is balancing our impact on the environment with New Zealand's increasing demand for energy. We need to make sure that homes and businesses have a secure supply of energy, so there's enough electricity to 'keep the lights on'. Yet we're also doing all we can to minimise our impact on the environment.

WHAT WE'RE DOING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Our new combined cycle gas turbine at Huntly, e3p, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by one million tonnes per annum. The amount of waste sent to landfill from our Auckland headquarters has reduced by approximately 30% since October 2007. And we have introduced hybrid cars to our company fleet to reduce our non-generation footprint even further.

These initiatives are part of our 'Hello Tomorrow Programme'. The three most important things we're hoping to do are:

  1. Build practical ways to address the impacts of climate change
  2. Reduce our environmental footprint
  3. Make a difference in the communities that we operate in and beyond

The Hello Tomorrow Programme is designed to make a real and noticeable difference to our environment. And Tree People, along with projects such as Schoolgen and the online educational game ElectroCity, is a big part of that.
